Discover Canterbury

At Canterbury, our focus is inspiring and nurturing confident, optimistic and compassionate young people who are ready for the world. We are an academic school, but above all else, we value all-roundedness in our students. Canterbury students have access to the best Arts and Sport programs in our area, as well as an array of service and leadership opportunities in our community.

Motto

Fortior Quo Paratior – The better prepared, the stronger.

Vision

To inspire and nurture confident, optimistic and compassionate young people who are ready for the world.

Aspiration

To be recognised nationally as a leading ELC-12 coeducational school, delivering holistic academic and co-curricular excellence within an inclusive culture which honours our Anglican heritage.

Canterbury has a proud record of outstanding academic results.

Unlike some schools who reduce the percentage of ATAR-eligible students each year to artificially inflate their results, an average of 77% of Canterbury students are ATAR-eligible each year. Of these students, we are proud that 30% achieved an ATAR of 90 or higher.

Whilst we pride ourselves on providing valuable vocational pathways for students, the vast majority of students each year are university-bound, with high numbers of Canterbury graduates each year studying:

  • Medicine and allied health (eg pharmacy, physiotherapy, psychology, nursing and midwifery)
  • Engineering, mathematics and sciences
  • Business, commerce and law
  • Creative industries and fine arts, including music.

Academic

Canterbury provides an academically-rigorous program that inspires a love of learning.
The comprehensive academic program begins in Prep and builds on learning experiences developed from the Australian Curriculum until Year 10 and the Queensland Certificate of Education until the end of Year 12.

Key to academic excellence is inspiring curiosity and a desire for continuous improvement, aspects embedded into every lesson at Canterbury. Canterbury staff understand students need support in developing strategies to achieve excellence that will serve them, not just through their schooling years, but into adult life.

Canterbury’s core value of scholarship encourages every student to commit to mastering new skills and enjoying the experience of feeling challenged.

The College not only values exceptional academic outcomes but also improvement in academic outcomes at all achievement levels. Our system of awards recognises both excellence and improvement.

Junior School

Canterbury’s Junior School is a dynamic, energetic and caring environment that places the child at the forefront of everything we do.

We follow the Australian Curriculum, with our students’ Literacy and Numeracy skills being explicitly taught and developed by our expert staff. All our staff are Teaching Handwriting, Reading And Spelling Skills (THRASS) trained, ensuring literacy instruction is delivered using an evidence-based program. Our high-quality curriculum ensures that our teaching and learning program is rigorous and enjoyable, offering specialist lessons in Spanish, Music, Digital Technology and Physical Education.

The College has a strong commitment to the development of values and behaviours that foster the growth of independent and resilient children. The importance of supporting our children to build strong and positive relationships is something we embed within our Wellbeing Blueprint.

Canterbury teams from Years 4-6 participate in the Junior TAS (The Associated Schools) independent schools sport competition on Saturday mornings.

We are an inclusive community that promotes high expectations and supportive relationships, allowing our children to develop in character and to aspire to be the best they can be.
